End of Season Presentations

The end of season presentations were held at the Hare and Hounds in Crowton on Friday 24th November.  28 people attended, enjoying a two course meal and good company.  In addition to formally presenting awards to the Club competition winners (the Wilbraham Cup, Anne and Tony Nield Cups), this year, each team captain awarded prizes to their player of the year.  This followed on from the brilliant example set by the Frodsham team and Norley Afternoon B team last year.   For the first time, a cup was awarded to the Crowton player who had the best aggregate result over the whole season, taking into account all league matches played. This will be an annual award and was generously donated by chairman, Peter Bellis.

Season's Review

john_edited.jpg

Wow, where did that season go, here we are in November already. The Winter League at Helsby is up and running and we just have the presentation evening left in the 2023 calendar (Friday 24th November at the Hare and Hounds). So what happened in 2023? Well, we had 53 members this year and thanks to the efforts of Simon Barton, many of the teams looked the part, sporting our new Crowton polo shirts and hoodies. A huge - THANK YOU, to Simon for organising this. On the green, we had another successsful year. In the Mid-Cheshire, Captain Phil Sidebotham's team finished third, adding £100 to the club's coffers. John Coats came first in the section averages. Well done John. In the Frodsham League, the team came 10th in Division 2, having been promoted last season. The Norley League saw the evening team finish 6th, whilst in the afternoon, both Crowton A and B finished 4th in their respective leagues. Last, but not least is the Runcorn League. A reorganisation of the leagues meant that there were just two sections, Crowton A playing in Section 1 and Crowton B playing in Section 2. The A team were the lowest ranked team at the beginning of the season, but managed a creditable 9th place and a semi-final outing in the Murphy cup. Ex-third division Crowton B defied all odds by finishing in 4th, behind three teams who were in Section 2 last season. Most improved player was Nigel Coates, seen here receiving his award from Ang and Bev (as he can't attend the presentation evening), well done Nigel. We ran the two Club competitions again this year. Gill Dale winning the Wilbraham Cup and Phil Sidebotham, the Anne Nield trophy. Earlier in the summer, Pete Robinson had once again won the Tony Nield Cup. As you will be aware, the green was not at its best this season and as a result, we have put in place a Green's team, who attended a green's maintenance course in September and have been active ever since. We have invested in professional renovations and new equipment and so far, so good. We hope to see the fruits of our labour in the Spring. So, that just leaves the presentation evening on 24th November. Following on from the great example set by the Frodsham team last season, each team has identified their players of the season. It should be a good evening. So, thank you to everyone for making this another fun and successful year. If you fancy doing a bit of DIY, working parties are held once per month, to do some general maintenance around the green, painting, weeding etc. Just look out for the emails from John.

2023 Wilbraham Cup

15 people made the most of the good weather to compete in the Wilbraham Cup and Anne Nield Trophy.  This year's Wilbraham Cup winner was Gill Dale, pictured here receiving her trophy from Club chairman Peter Bellis.  Gill beat John Coats in the final.

Green Maintenance Training

As you will be aware, the green has not been at its best this season.  In an attempt to make improvements for future seasons, we have arranged a one day classroom based training session with Sampson Training.  The purpose of the training is to provide a basic introduction to the activities that need to be carried out each year for the maintenance of the green, including:

  • Health & Safety

  • Pre-season Preparation

  • Maintenance Operations

  • Preparation for Play

  • End of Season Renovations

  • Winter Maintenance

The course will be held on Friday 25th August 2023 at Crowton Village Hall. The course is accredited by UK Rural Skills. Participants receive a comprehensive course manual and a UK Rural Skills certificate of training.

If you are interested in taking part, please contact Maggie Coats - 07808765110.

Wilbraham Cup

The Club Championship - the Wilbraham Cup will take place on Sunday 3rd September, 2023 - start time 10.30am. This is a singles competition, all first round losers are entered into the Anne Nield Trophy consolation competition, so you are guaranteed at least two games.  If you are interested in taking part, please let John Coats know or put your name on the entry sheet in the Crowton Bowls Hut.

Tony Nield Cup

On 30th July, we held our first club event of the season, the Tony Nield Trophy.  This is a round robin event, where you change partners for each round. This year saw 16 players compete for the cup, with Peter Robinson the overall winner.  Thank you to everyone who made this another fun day.

2023 Cup Matches

Crowton have had mixed fortunes in this season's cup competitions so far, with only the two Runcorn League teams still in the current competitions.  Crowton A progressed in the Murphy Cup preliminary round, beating Helsby C at Kingsley on 15th June. Crowton B were unsuccessful against Norton A at Frodsham Red Lion, so are now entered into the P&A Morgan Consolation Competition.

The Frodsham League team took part in the Fred Rogers Cup, losing to Halton RBL A at Helsby, and were entered into the Alf Jones Cup. Unfortunately, they lost to Helsby D at Kingsley on Wednesday 14th June.

In the Norley League, Crowton progressed through the round of 32 of the Coronation Cup, beating Barnton CC A by 9 chalks. This resulted in a meeting against Bunbury on Thursday 8th June. A shortage of two players, meant that it was too great a challenge and the team bowed out at this point.

In the Midcheshire League, Crowton progressed through the round of 64 of the Littler Cup, beating our friends at Hartford A to meet Kingswood at Frodsham Red Lion in the round of 32. Unfortunately, Crowton bowed out at this point.

Well done to everyone who has taken part in these matches, and good luck to Crowton A and B in their upcoming matches.

Welcome to 2023 and dates for your diaries

Here we are again at the start of another season. Several of the leagues are now in full swing, although the Midcheshire League doesn't start until the 19th May.

We have already taken part in a number of cup competitions, both as individuals and teams. Phil Sidebotham and George Stiff played in the Runcorn League Champion of Champions competition, which was held at Owleywood on Sunday 23rd April.

In the Coronation Cup (Norley Evening League), the Crowton team beat Barnton CC A - 244 to 235 after application of the handicaps. They will now play Bunbury A in the Round of 16 on or before 8th June 2023.

The Midcheshire team competition (the Littler Cup) saw Crowton beat Hartford A - 318 to 236 at Owleywood.  Hartford A included several familiar faces, as many Crowton players also play for Hartford in this league.  The round of 32 match was a difficult tie against Kingswood at Frodsham Red Lion. Section 1 team Kingswood emerged the victors 273 - 256, but the Crowton team put up a good fight.

In the Frodsham League, the round of 32 for the Fred Rogers Cup is scheduled for 24th May, when Crowton (+40), take on Halton RBL A (+22) at Helsby.  The first round of the Runcorn League's Murphy Cup competition sees Crowton A (60) play Helsby C (40) at Kingsley and Crowton B (70) play Norton Arms A (30) at Frodsham Red Lion.

Any player wanting to take part in the various individual / pairs competions should see the notices displayed in the pavilion at Crowton.

Whilst dates have not yet been confirmed, the Club events this year are scheduled as follows: the Tony Nield Cup (funday) will be held in July 2023 and the Wilbraham Cup / Anne Nield Cup will be the first Sunday in September.  Watch this space for further updates.

If anyone is looking for social bowling (and the chance to win 6 eggs), the Round Robins have now started and take place on Monday and Thursday (2pm start).

Have a great year's bowling.
