End of Season review
The last action of the 2022 season was the club championship, the Wilbraham Cup. This is a knockout competition for individual players. Twenty-two members entered this year, and after some great bowling, the final was contested by Sylvia Martin and Phil Sidebotham. Phil took the honours, lifting the cup for the first time.
People who lost their first match were entered into the inaugural Anne Nield Trophy, which replaced the previous Shield event. After a battle of lefthanders, Maggie Coats just won through, with Chris Flood, runner up.
Thanks to Peter Bellis for organising the day.
The Wilbraham Cup rounded off another successful year for Crowton Bowling Club, both on and off the green. We have 53 members, which for a small village club is an excellent figure. There is a great atmosphere in the Club and brilliant support for the various social events. The Round Robin continues to be a great opportunity for social bowling.
The Frodsham League team has had a great season, winning promotion straight back up to Section 2. They finished 2nd in the League and reached the final of the Alf Jones Cup, where they lost to a very strong Helsby D team. Congratulations to Colin Dean and his team.
The Midcheshire team couldn't quite match last year's performance but managed to finish 4th in Section 3.

In the Norley League, we had two teams playing in the Afternoon League, Crowton B finished 9th, one position higher than last year (when the team was playing at Winnington). This was a creditable effort, on a new green that was particularly tricky during the hot weather. The A team came second in a closely contested battle, there were only 22 chalks between 1st and 3rd. Well done to Terry Summers and her team.

In the Norley Evening League, Crowton finished 5th, although again the competition was close with just 35 chalks between 2nd and 5th.
Both Runcorn League teams finished mid-table, A team in 5th and B team in 6th. The 'A' team again had a good cup run, making it to the semi-final of the Murphy Cup, where they bowed out to the subsequent cup winners, Grapes B. Although the final position for the 'B' team was the same as last season, all players had improved and there was an excellent spirit, which is the point of this team.

Following last year's foray into the Helsby Winter League, Crowton Chameleons will once again be braving the weather on alternate Tuesday and Wednesday nights. It was a popular event last year, with the team finishing 6th out of 9 teams in Section 2, here's to another good winter.

So that rounds up 2022, the last few activities are to put the green to bed for the winter and to hold our presentation evening. The green took a pounding this year, due to the extreme weather conditions and so we are planning to do significant maintenance of the playing surface in the next month. The surrounds are also looking tired in a few areas and so we have some structural work to do over the winter. Volunteers to help would be very welcome. Watch out for emails from John Coats.

The annual presentation evening is planned for 18th November 2022, at the Hare and Hounds pub in Crowton. John will contact everyone nearer the time with details.

A huge Thank you to everyone involved at Crowton, the hard-working captains and vice captains, the volunteers cutting and maintaining the green, Bill for running the Round Robins, Jeff and Peter for organising the fun day and Wilbraham Cup, the teams who have represented the Club in the leagues and cups and the social bowlers, all of whom contribute to making this a fun, enjoyable, successful and friendly club. Thank you all.

Tony Nield Cup
Jeff Henton ran yet another excellent fun day, where fourteen members took part in a pairs event for the Tony Nield Cup. Pairs were swapped for each round, with partners becoming opponents in the next game. The sun shone and at the end of the event, John Coats was presented with the cup, with Gill Dale the runner up. Here are a few photos from the day.
Dates for your Diaries
Crowton Bowling Club will be holding its annual Tony Nield Cup tournament on Sunday 28th August 2022, starting at 10am.
All members are welcome to participate.
This is a Round Robin Pairs competition in which everyone will play several matches but with a different partner everytime.
It is as much a social occasion and the chance to mix with players from our various teams as a competition.
We hope to finish early to mid afternoon.

The Club championship - the Wilbraham Cup will be held on Sunday 11th September. This is a singles competition, with first round losers being entered into the "plate" competition.
Alf Jones Cup Final
The final of the Alf Jones Cup was held on Thursday 18th August at Kingsley. Crowton (+48) took on Helsby D (+4), with Helsby running out winners - 163 to 136. Well done to the Crowton team for a great cup run.
The Frodsham Team book a place in the final of the Alf Jones Cup
The Frodsham team coped well with a tricky green at Kingswood this evening, to book their place in the final of the Alf Jones Cup. They beat Castle Park A of Division 2 by 150 - 106 before the application of the handicap, final score 198 - 152. The green was running and it was a challenge at times to keep the jack on the green, at one point, the need to contact the Guiness Book of Records was mentioned, to see if they had broken the record for the number of attempts to place the jack!!! This win will see them pitted against Helsby D of Division 1, who have a handicap of 4, venue and date to be confirmed. Well done to all involved and good luck for the final.

Unfortunately, the Runcorn League team were not successful in the Murphy Cup, losing narrowly to Grapes B on the 4th August. It was another good performance in the cup, getting to the semi-final for the second year running, .....third time lucky?

Cup competitions - results and dates for your diaries
Here we are in July and we still have two teams in cup action in the Frodsham and Runcorn Leagues.
The Frodsham League team are drawn to play Chetwode A at Kingsley in the Quarter Finals of the Alf Jones Cup. This match is due to be played on or before Monday 25th July. Crowton have a 38 chalk advantage in the handicap.
Both Runcorn League teams made it to the last 16 of the Murphy Cup. The A team had a last minute Bye and so are now due to play in the Quarter Finals on 21st July - venue and opponents to be advised.
The B team had the harder challenge, being drawn against Section 1 leaders Delamere Tigers, at Kingsley, this evening (7th July). Even with a 70 chalk advantage and some good performances, it was a step too far and they finally bowed out - 124 - 168.
Good Luck to our Frodsham and Runcorn A teams.

April has seen us bow out of two cup competitions. We played against Barnton Cricket Club A at Davenham in the Littler Cup - 257 - 306. This was followed by the Coronation Cup match against Wharton Cons A, with 5 players at home and 5 making the trip to Winsford. It was a close run match, with excellent performances by the "Home " team, resulting in an overall score of 210, just 6 points behind the last year's Division 1 winners. Well done to all involved.

The next set of team cup competitions are the Runcorn League - Murphy Cup matches, with the A team looking to go one round further to the final and the B team hoping to replicate last year's wins against Section 1 opposition. The first round is on Thursday 16th June, with Crowton A (60) playing Willowbrook (65) at Frodsham Red Lion. Crowton B (70) are playing Delamere Beavers (50) at Overton on the same night.

John has sent out details of a number of individual cup competitions and there are also sheets in the Hut at Crowton, if you are interested in playing in these.
